Bombyx, the silkworm (English)
Gracias a Salud
One of my best teachers was a nun named Salud.
She taught art history and managed to make it one of my favorite subjects. You see, I am a pure science person, but pure, pure, pure.
What was his trick?
He would take us on trips to see churches (and other things, but I remember the churches most of all).
When you are a pimply teenager and they put a building like that in front of you, what you see are stones. And I was predisposed not to like that too much. The stones are still and cold.
Remember, I'm a science guy.
But Salud was telling you a story.
He would show you where to look. Suddenly that stone was no longer a cold stone, but it transported you to a distant time with other people who stepped on the same place you were stepping on. Who had a problem to solve.
Everything was already moving.
Then you saw yourself in the skin of the architect who wanted to evolve from Romanesque to Gothic. He was fed up with that darkness and wanted light. And the pointed arches were no longer a stone, they were a mathematical marvel, which put the weight on the columns and allowed them to make large windows and stained glass.
If Salud had not been with us, for me the churches would be stones placed one on top of the other. Cold and immobile. Now, they tell me a story.
That's the thing about going with a person who tells you what you are seeing, with a story.
In the silkworm course I tell you stories about every little thing you can see on that animal.
And suddenly it's not just a worm that you have to give a mulberry tree to and then it turns into a butterfly.
It eats, it moves, it sees... just like you do. Some things it does the same, others in a very different way. Nature is very wise and looks for different solutions to the same problems.
You have it in front of you, you can touch it, you can see it under the microscope....
I teach you to look at it as Salud taught me to look at churches.
And I assure you that it will surprise you.
And you can also "do things" with them.
For this I have these proposals:
Bombyx, the silkworm (Spanish).
Bombyx, the silkworm (English)
A hug
Txus, from science, but an admirer of architecture. Thanks to Salud
