English version below
Txus

Estructura del virus de la gripe
The flu virus is special. Every year there is practically a "new" virus that is somewhat or very different from the previous year.
And this is not only due to mutations when it comes to making copies, as we saw yesterday.
This virus has another peculiarity.
Let's go back to the photocopy store and the envelope. There is not actually one sheet of paper with the virus instructions. There are 8 sheets.
The flu virus has its instructions, its genetic information in 8 strands of RNA.
Imagine that in that store not one letter arrives, but 2. Two slightly different letters, each with 8 sheets of paper.
When the employees of the stationery store have to put the letters in the envelopes, there are times when they mix up the sheets and put sheets of letter A in letter B and vice versa.
Among all these new viruses that are formed, there will be some that have sheets of letter A and sheets of letter B. When they go out the door, blown away by the wind to infect other stores, then we have a mess again.
That is why the flu virus is extraordinarily variable. When the same cell is co-infected by two different strains of virus, they "mix" inside and a new virus emerges.
And from time to time, it varies so much that it gets out of control, creating serious pandemics.
In these pandemics, animals are usually involved.
See you tomorrow.
A big hug
María
