No estoy sola :)
Txus
Today I am very grateful to Monica for giving me the job done ;)
Look what a beautiful email:
Good afternoon,
I am Monica, a kindergarten teacher in a small town in the province of Huesca.
As you say in your emails, we were many children who had a childhood with silkworms. In my case, I remember the routine of every spring weekend, when we went to the village to eat with my grandparents, we went to pick mulberry trees in the park. I loved to watch how they moved and ate those little bugs, I could also spend hours watching them, there is something magical about it.
Three years ago, a schoolmate offered us some silkworms for our class, but I was very disappointed because she only gave us 6 worms. In a kindergarten classroom, with children ranging from 3 to 6 years old, you can imagine that they did not manage to survive much, I think there was one that did cocoon, but we did not get any eggs.
The following year, one of my students brought a box with many, many worms. Since then, we have been taking care of them, feeding them, observing the whole life cycle....
We did a small project for kindergarten, but it wasn't very scientific.
And this is the second spring that we are seeing how many worms are born, so many that it is difficult to get food for all of them, especially at the beginning, when the mulberry trees have not yet sprouted. And little by little I am becoming an expert in locating trees of this species, making the town marshals give me dirty looks when they see us picking leaves, people wondering what we are doing....
I have tried to feed them not only the leaves, but also the flowers and fruits, they eat both, although I do not know if it would be better to give them only leaves. In the case of flowers, they are especially useful now at the beginning, when many mulberry trees do not have any buds yet and yet they are full of flowers. As I have been researching through the networks and comments from people close to me, there are people who put the eggs in the fridge to keep them until spring and take them out only when they are sure that the mulberry trees have enough green, and there are also people who freeze the mulberry leaves from one year to the next, to feed them in these first weeks. I have not tried either option, but I would like to get your opinion.
This experience makes me go back to childhood, to recover some of that magic of feeding them, observing them... and trying to transmit it to "my little ones".
On the other hand, I go crazy offering and trying to give away to all teachers and families with children who may be interested, but now I already have many and every day more and more are born, so if you know of anyone interested in having worms, if you want to offer your course with live specimens, or have any idea of what to do with them .... (it makes me sad to kill them and also to throw away the papers full of eggs in which every day new worms keep appearing).
Well, and all this to tell you that I am going to buy one of your courses, which I hope will help us to carry out a more scientific project at school and to know more about these little animals. Thank you very much for the explanatory video about the content of the course. I only have one doubt... I imagine that the 110 € course will have content that I will not be able to exploit with my infant students, but on the other hand, the 33 € course will be short, with only 4 activities. Although it is true that the little piece of video you have put on the emperor who saw how the trees were left without leaves was delighting me and now I need to see it in its entirety and also show it to the kids in class. I guess you are going to tell me to take the big course, I just wanted to confirm that all the proposals you make in the small course are also included in the big one.
And on the other hand... I'm also going to buy the "Bombyx" story, just to confirm.... Does it tell the story of the emperor?
Now we are still on vacation, but I'm already looking forward to go back to school next week and start with this project!!!!
That said, if you have any ideas on what to do with my worm overproduction, don't hesitate to tell me!!!!
Thank you very much for everything.
I answer to Monica and by the way to the whole class ;)
It makes me enormously happy to find people in cyberspace with the same concerns as me. It's the magic of the internet, isn't it? We often complain about progress, but I could never have found someone who understands the looks of incomprehension of your fellow citizens when they see you jumping up and down to pick mulberry leaves. I am not alone :)
Putting worm eggs in the fridge for a year works, but there's a trick to it. It's one of the breeding tips you see in the breeding module of the worm courses. And many others.
If you want to have worms and don't know where to get them from, write me and I'll put you in touch with me.
If you feel like having worms and don't know where to get them from, write to me and I'll put you in touch with Monica, who you can see they are coming out of her ears.
The silk goddess story you refer to is beautiful. It doesn't appear in Bombyx, the silkworm, but I'm thinking of making a story just about it. The story is really cool. At the moment you can get it in the Silkworm course, in video format.
The small course is included in its entirety in the big one, as Monica says. Both have activities for students from kindergarten to high school. There are even experiments on Mendelian genetics.
The idea of dividing them was to make it more accessible to different budgets.
So I'll summarize the options I give you if you want to do a "more scientific" silkworm project, even if it's in kindergarten:
A silkworm mini-course worth 33 euros. With videos and 6 activities to observe them better.
A course of silkworms more "fat" (110 euros), to become a super expert in worms, do projects in class or at home, observe them microscopically...
A story, which is very cool and is narrated by the worm itself, and you have it in Spanish or English:
Well, you can get the story here:
Thank you very much Monica!
A big hug
María
