Poeta y gusanos

My friend Sonia says that I put some email subjects that always leave her intrigued.
So when I chose today's I imagined your face thinking, let's see where we get this one today....
Will there be any poet who, in his right mind, writes nice poems to worms?
Has a worm crawled into a poet's ear?
Have the worms eaten the poet's poems written on a beautiful parchment?
There are a thousand combinations if you use a little imagination, but in reality it's all simpler. But no less poetic.
I won't get involved any further and I'll get you out of my doubts.
It turns out that in Orihuela there is a museum dedicated to Miguel Hernandez, who was from there. In his house, to be more precise. The other day we went to see it with a beautiful guided tour.
And of course, it has nothing to do to walk through an old house, as beautiful as it is, that someone tells you the stories that were lived there.
As with animals and science, it is not the same to see silkworms, than to have someone explain to you what is behind what you are seeing.
Well, they walked us through their house, their living rooms, bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, corrals... and we arrived at the garden.
In the garden there was a small vegetable garden, with local vegetables and two trees.
The first was a fig tree. A giant one with a beautiful trunk. According to the guide it was one of the most famous fig trees in the world because that was where the poet sat to write his poetry.
It had a beautiful trunk, like a backrest.
But if you notice, I didn't go to take the picture on the poet's chair, but on the tree in front of it.
That tree is a mulberry. And a very beautiful one too.
It turns out that they had it there because Miguel Hernandez's family had silkworms. Every spring they fed them the mulberry leaves and then sold the cocoons to the silk factory in Orihuela.
It was an extra source of income that many families had.
In southeastern Spain there is a great tradition of silk industry. And the Orihuela factory was open until the beginning of the century. In fact, both in Murcia and Valencia there are silk museums.
Then that was lost in the region, but the custom of raising silkworms among children continued. But in the world there are many places where silk is still cultivated and is a powerful engine of the economy.
How could this be that a trade route was made linking East and West, the silk road.
A worm uniting cultures. Fabric.
Doesn't that seem like a lot of things to make a learning situation? Rural economies, history, poetry, stories, biology, animals, plants?
If you need help with the stories, animals and biology part I have several materials that can help you:
A story, Bombyx, the silkworm, where Bombyx himself tells you about his life, which is very entertaining. I also have it in Spanish and English, in case you want to include languages in this equation.
A mini-course on silkworms for 33 euros. With videos and 6 activities to observe them better.
A more "fat" silkworm course (110 euros), to become a super expert in silkworms, to do projects in class or at home, to observe them microscopically...

You can buy them in the links above.
