No bichos-no polinizacion-no frutos…

He pinchado. Mi limpiaparabrisas no tiene ni un bicho.
When I was little we had a red Renault 5.
We don't even know what it did. My parents, with their traveling soul, took it all over Spain.
From the back seat and with the carefree mind of a child, I noticed the number of bugs that were stamped on the windshield.
It had to be cleaned from time to time because there were a lot of them.
Now I no longer have to clean my car windshield to get rid of bugs.
The reason is terribly alarming: there are no bugs. They have decreased dramatically.
In the UK they actually do a citizen science project called The Bugs Matter that is very interesting. They invite people to put like a plate on their license plate and they count how many bugs they get on it.
This allows you to get a pretty good handle on bug populations.
The result is just spooky.
In the UK they detected a 57.8% decline between 2004 and 2021.
In a similar study in Denmark, they saw between 80 and 97% reduction in 22 years.
What difference does it make, you might ask? Well, it's a full-blown catastrophe. If there are no bugs, the food chains stop. And so does pollination.
That is, there are a lot of animals that feed on insects. Well, they don't have to eat them anymore.
The bugs pass the pollen from some flowers to others and in that little way they pollinate them, that is to say, they fertilize them and make those plants reproduce. No bugs-no pollination-no fruits...
This week is about bugs.
And I also want to do something And I also want to do something to make children aware that bugs are important.
I'm going to make a drawing contest. Of bugs.
The winner will get a butterfly notebook or another bug, I'll see.
And I'll make a bug story for sure.
You can do something too. Tell your children or students what I'm going to tell them this week. And have them draw their favorite bug. And have them write an essay about what would happen in a world without bugs.
Tomorrow I'll tell you how to participate.
In these beautiful notebooks they can make their drawings:
A hug

PS: curiosities of life, I am writing this newsletter from my car while waiting for the tow truck. I have a flat tire. My windshield wiper has no bugs on it.
