Y poco a poco fui tranquilizándome.
Y me encontraba mucho mejor.

We can all be sculptors of our own brain
Don Santiago Ramón y Cajal
One day I was working in the animal house.
Autobiographical fact 1:
In case you just arrived: hello my name is Txus, I'm a scientific veterinarian, delighted. And that means that I studied veterinary medicine and I have worked all my life (25 years) in the world of science. In the CSIC I spent 15 years directing an animal facility of genetically modified mice in the Institute of Neurosciences of Alicante, a very powerful research institute.
Science is in my blood, I am super skeptical and anything that surprises me I will look for published scientific evidence about it.
Having cleared this up, I continue.
For some reason that I don't remember I was pretty attacked. It was something usual, working in one of these elite centers and with a position of responsibility is very stressful.
I don't remember why but I said something to one of the most dusty technicians in the animal house. A super nervous girl.
She looked me up and down. Calm. Without getting the least bit upset.
-All right, María Jesús, but calmly.
I immediately asked her: "What happened to you? I had never seen you so calm.
-I'm taking meditation classes and I can't tell you how good it's been for me.
The next day I was in the front row at her meditation classes to see what it was that had transformed this girl. It was also an extremely stressful time for me, so somehow my body was asking for a balance.
So I started meditating. And little by little I calmed down. I had a very big problem and I saw that this helped me to face it in a way that I had never thought I was capable of before.
And I felt much better.
As I said in the second paragraph, I said, wow, here is something. Go back and read paragraph 2 and you will understand what comes next.
So I went to one of the researchers who had a more related line of research and I asked him. Besides, I got along very well with him and saw him as a fairly open person.
I told him that I was meditating and that I was freaking out about the results. And I asked him if there was scientific evidence that it "worked".
He told me a lot, explained how the brains of top meditators had been analyzed and the functional and structural changes that had been observed.
Functional changes refer to changes in the way they function and structural to anatomical changes.
To use the simile of a muscle that everyone understands. If you are a slacker and you join the gym, and you are constant and all that, after a while your muscles begin to grow (structural changes) and you can lift more weight (functional changes).
Well, something like that happens in the brain when meditating.
This week, as I mentioned yesterday, I am going to go deeper into those changes. I am studying and I really find it amazing everything I am finding so I am very excited about this block I am going to write.
How come my children have signed up for Irene's meditations after hearing me.
Autobiographical die 2:
I'm referring to my two teenage sons (14 and 17 years old).
You know, adolescence = rebellious stage in which what your mother tells you is usually = poop.
Well this was bought for me.
If you want to test yourself if meditation suits you, subscribe to my friend Irene's newsletter. When you subscribe she gives you a free guided meditation.
It's very easy, you find a quiet place, close your eyes and start doing what she tells you in an audio.
That's it.
And if you do it every day your brain changes and you are happier.
It seems like a joke but it's true and I'm telling you that this week I'm going to give you all kinds of scientific evidence.
