The other day I told you about a book to identify Mediterranean fish species. One of those that you put your head in the water and you can see thousands of them, but almost nobody knows what they are called. It is this guide
But what I most like to know about animals is not their name. The name is fine, but what is really exciting is to get to know them, to know what they do, what they think, what they feel, what they learn, how they live?
Fish are animals that generate very little empathy for humans. Their eyes are open all the time and their face is completely expressionless. There are no videos of cute little fish on tiktok, at least not as much as videos of kittens.
But they are really exciting. They hide stories, anecdotes, tremendous curiosities and one of the books that I think best reflects it is this one:
Do you know what happens? We think they are animals "less evolved" than us and that is a big lie. Let's see, they appeared before us in evolution, that's completely true.
But in all that time they have not stayed still, they appeared before us and have adapted much more and much better to their environment: the aquatic environment. In fact, they have had much more time than we have had to evolve. And they have done it very well, without destroying it, unlike us, who destroy everything.
Human beings with their arrogance find it very difficult to see these things...
So this book uncovers exciting secrets of animals that are misunderstood by man.
And of course it breaks the myth that fish have no memory. I don't have a memory, as soon as I leave the cinema I forget what film I've seen. Fish do. Just tell that to my danios when I go in to feed them and they all come to greet me...
A hug
Txus, vet in love with a fish.
