When I was little I used to ask myself questions about numbers in my life, like how many letters I would have written or how many minutes and seconds I would have lived.
Don't believe that today I still do them, but of course more oriented to adult and practical life, how many times have I gone to take my children to and from school?
Puff...
And I thought I was the only one with these existential doubts, until I read in Science shots, an informative edition of Science magazine, that scientists already knew how many ants there were in the world.
In other words, I am not alone.
There are other geeks with questions about numbers that are more complicated to answer.
Well, in order to count those ants they had to gather 12000 reports from databases all over the world.
I'll tell you how many ants they have counted at the end of the email (post-postdata ant).
The thing is that to infer such a gigantic number they had to pull mathematical competence to the fullest.
Biomedical research is not possible without mathematics. It is something inherent, it is implicit in the fact of doing research.
In fact, the researchers who really master biostatistics are highly sought after and they are often chosen to be part of the projects.
I bet my title that in the group of ant counters there were a few biostatisticians, if not most of them.
So if you ever had the idea that mathematics and biology couldn't go together, you were wrong.
And since Danio in class is a real science project, you get mathematical calculations everywhere you look: counting eggs, larvae, making percentages, measuring things, comparing...
Tomorrow I will tell you about some of the mathematical things you can work on with Danio's project, but today I wanted to talk to you about ants.
There are a lot of them. Look at the postscript. So they can say that we are the dominant animal.
A hug
Txus.

PD1:If you want to do the Danio project you have to ask for a budget first and request a date when you would like to do it. Writeme back if you are interested in the English version of this project.
Post PD ant farm:
The total number of ants is 20 quadrillion.
Amazing.
Let's see who's the handsome or pretty one to put all that together.
That's why mathematics is so useful. They allow you to infer this titanic data without having to put them all together and count them one by one.
That puts together a biomass of 12 megatonnes (i.e. if you put all the ants together on a giant scale they would weigh that much, 12 megatonnes).
12 megatonnes is more than the mammals and birds of the whole world combined. Imagine the enormous importance of these small and abundant animals in the ecosystem.
