Si te soy sincera yo no acababa de entender muy bien eso de la necesidad de tener referentes femeninos en ciencia para las niñas.
Hasta que la madre de Iraia me enseñó este dibujo:
Iraia, con 5 años había estado muy encima de todo el proyecto de Danio en clase desde que empezamos a trabajar con él.
Un día cogió un folio y empezó a dibujar.
Su madre le preguntó qué era eso.
Y le dijo que científicas.

Unas mujeres con unos peces, dedicadas a la ciencia.
Y me acordé de mi abuela y de lo que me contaba de cuándo tenía la misma edad que ella.
Mi abuela con 5 años era tan lista como Iraia. Seguramente dibujaba igual de bien.
Pero no llegaba al fregadero.
Así que su madre le puso un taburete y desde los 5 años se dedicó a fregar los platos.
En la huerta de Murcia, a principios del siglo XX el referente de una mujer era su madre con las tareas del hogar.
Eso de las mujeres científicas pues como que no.
Mi abuela fue ama de casa. Pero ya se encargó ella de que sus hijas no lo fueran. Y que su nieta tuviera claro que las mujeres no tenían que dedicarse obligatoriamente a fregar.
Por suerte, ahora tenemos mujeres científicas que pueden servir de referente a niñas como Iraia y días como hoy, el 11 de febrero en el que lo recordamos.
Tengo un club.
Lo llevo yo que soy una mujer. Hablo yo, escribo yo, dibujo yo, cuento mis batallitas de científica… y eso hace que las niñas que hay dentro sepan que si ellas quieren también lo pueden hacer.

To be honest, I didn't quite understand the need for girls to have female references in science.
Until Iraia's mother showed me this drawing:
Iraia, 5 years old, had been very much on top of Danio's project in class since we started working with him.
One day she took a sheet of paper and began to draw.
Her mother asked her what that was.
And he said scientists.
CientíficAs, ending in As.
Some women with fish, dedicated to science.
And I remembered my grandmother and what she used to tell me when I was the same age as her.
My grandmother with 5 years was as smart as Iraia. Surely she drew just as well.
But she did not reach the sink.
So her mother put a stool and from the 5 years she dedicated herself to wash the dishes.
In the orchard of Murcia, at the beginning of the 20th century, a woman's reference point was her mother with the household chores.
That of women scientists, well, I don't think so.
My grandmother was a housewife. But she made sure that her daughters were not. And she made sure that her granddaughter knew that women did not have to do the dishes.
Fortunately, now we have women scientists who can serve as a reference to girls like Iraia and days like today, February 11 in which we remember.
I have a club.
I run it because I am a woman. I speak, I write, I draw, I tell my little stories as a scientist... and that makes the girls inside know that if they want they can do it too.
