Roque cuenta mariposas.
Txus
The other day I told you that I had dinner with a very interesting couple with whom we had a very special connection and I told you about the girl. Today I am going to tell you about the boy, Roque.
Roque counts butterflies.
Say it's not cool. For that alone he deserves a newsletter all to himself.
You'll see.
It turns out that Roque is a biologist and has dedicated his whole life to the field. What they call a bootstrap biologist. He has worked in some of the coolest places in the Valencian Community tracking wild species. One of those jobs that I look at with real envy.
There are not many, don't believe it.
He tells stories that make me hold my head with my hands and open my eyes and ears wide.
Now he is in the Font Roja, a natural park near here.
And he is counting butterflies. The colorful ones, the ones that come out during the day.
Butterflies are a very important bio-indicator.
They have a standard route of about 2 km covering different habitats near the Polop river.
They have to count the butterflies they see for each 200 meter sector and note what they see in front of them at 5 meters or less.
Don't tell me it's not pretty.
In Alicante they have been doing it for a couple of years, so you don't have reliable data yet. You need much longer time series.
In other places they have been doing it for more than 20 years.
And there they are seeing how sadly they are decreasing. In Catalonia, for example, they are pioneers in counting butterflies and they have seen that these are decreasing especially in well-preserved agricultural areas, less so in forests.
Reasons for this: pesticides, the fields are getting bigger and bigger and there are no boundaries, that is, the gap between farm and farm where these animals could settle is getting smaller, there are no fallows (the time in which the land is left to rest)...
Can you imagine a world without butterflies?
How sad, isn't it?
You have more information about the project here, and a lot of resources to identify and know them better:
Say it's not cool as a learning situation. Count the butterflies in your town.
Well, I remind you about the contest. It's about making children aware of the lack of bugs. You read them this newsletter and they start drawing.
When they finish drawing, they put their name, age and place of origin. Take a picture of it and upload it here, in the column bug contest 2024.
Any child up to 12 years old can participate. No minimum age.
I will make a shortlist of about 10 or so and put them in this newsletter. The final winner will be voted on.
To those 10 I will send the story A María Luisa le gusta un pez in electronic format. And to the first three a copy of my next story: Bombyx, the silkworm, which is also a moth!
A big hug
María
