Txus
I don't know if you have children but I am going to tell you what for me has been one of the most magical moments of my motherhood (I have 3, now grown up, but I will never forget this).
The moment I am referring to is when they start to move, and you notice it. Something has moved in your belly, and you realize it's not your tummy crying out for food. It's something else.
At first, it's a little weird because you can't quite identify it. But then suddenly, you are aware that there is something alive inside of you, and it comes like a wave of love that starts in your belly and goes to your arms.
And those moments of movement connect you with that creature inside you. When they get older, suddenly you get an elbow or a leg or who knows what it is, and your belly deforms. And you push it down, and you start playing with it.
I am convinced that these first movements have a lot to do with establishing the mother-child bond, that brutal force of nature that lasts a lifetime.
You don't feel these movements in zebrafish but see them. The day the eggs arrive, the larva starts to move.
And it's something completely hypnotic. You would stare forever. I remember at an education fair where I had a booth next to some guys selling projectors for classrooms.
They wouldn't leave my danioscopes. They would stare dumbly at the larvae moving around. And they told me just that: it's hypnotic; I can't move from here. Maybe they did not sell as many projects as they could have. Side effects of beauty.
Also, at fairs, several mothers of children with autism or hyperactivity disorders told me they had never seen their children look at something with so much attention.
I am convinced that those same movements begin to create that bond with those tiny animals that came in a test tube. And seeing that wonder in something so small makes you more aware of the miracle of life around us.
In early July, you will have a chance to see this. Mind you, the day they arrive set aside as much time as you can to enjoy this unique moment.
A hug
María
