Muchas gracias. Se llama Figuras ocultas.

Undoubtedly the person I had the best time with during the almost 15 years I was at CSIC was Victor, the inventor.
Let me tell you.
When a research institute (at least biomedical, which is what I have been involved in) is of a certain size, it usually has one (or several) of what is coldly called mechanical workshop or electronic workshop, something like that.
But don't be fooled by the very dull name.
These workshops are inhabited by full-fledged inventors. People capable of interpreting the complex mental movements that an inspired neuroscientist can come up with, and give them the shape of junk never imagined by any industry.
For me, a paradise in every sense of the word.
And of those I met, the best was undoubtedly Victor.
It goes without saying that with 12,000 mice in my charge, a thousand researchers asking me for the strangest things and this little head that God gave me, I was at Victor the inventor's door every day with a different story.
But I think I was one of his favorite "customers". The requests of the animalarium always had priority, I am convinced that he found them the most fun.
But there is another thing. We respected his work and put it where it belonged. Continuing with what I was saying yesterday about invisible jobs in science, I have not seen gender problems in my career in science (except for the issue of pregnancies, but that is another story and will have to be told another time). In fact, when a discovery was captained by a woman, the institute would stick out its chest.
But what I have seen, and very much so, is an enormous classism between what is considered a "technical" position and a "researcher" position.
The researcher is the one who signs the articles and appears on TV if he comes up with something good. He is supposed to be responsible for the creative part. I also have to say, he has a very hard career behind him.
But his work would never come out without an important technical team behind him. And this is not known, nor does it appear in articles, nor does it have the social recognition that, in my humble opinion, it deserves. In science there are many clerks, laboratory and animal technicians, inventors in fairytale workshops, hidden and of whom no one speaks and without whose work, we could not inject any vaccine or receive any new medical treatment.
Let this newsletter serve to highlight their work.
So when I came with the Danios I kept calling Victor. There are many things he helped me to develop to achieve a proper egg production that they don't have anywhere else in the world.
But the inventive ecstasy was undoubtedly with the danioscope.
Of course, I told him: look Victor, I'm going with these eggs everywhere and I need a way for people to see them without having to take the microscope with me, because it is unfeasible.
At that time I got my hands on a cardboard microscope that did not focus very well, but I found it very inspiring.
So we started to think about it. I kept 3 huge boxes of prototypes, I spent a lot of money to bring me from China all the lenses that could make something small and big...
And so, one fine day Victor came to Villapez and told me, we got it. And out came this:
I squealed
Stop
The whole town would hear me.
It looked better than under the microscope! What a beauty!
We called this marvel, of course, DANIOSCOPE.
We patented it, and I went to a toymaker in Ibi, a town with a strong toy industry in Alicante, and I asked him to make it for me. The toymaker liked me and helped me a lot.
And they work super, super well. They are machines and leave it perfect and beautiful.
With the danioscopes I do my workshops, I go to fairs... I show the project and I also sell them, of course.
Everyone is very surprised by what you can see with that little methacrylate box and your cell phone.
I have made a new run of Danioscopes.
Because a danioscope is included in the Danio kit at home. That is, in addition to the eggs and what you need to raise the danios up to a month and a half, you have this wonder, which you can then use as a microscope to see whatever you want with your mobile.
Starting tomorrow June 26 at 15:15 you can buy a project with this beautiful effect.
All the information is here: DANIO AT HOME
A hug
María
PS1: only 15 people will be able to buy it. Yesterday I reached 13000 people reading this newsletter, which is a lot. So when it comes out, if you want it, don't waste too much time. 15:15.
PS2: many people have answered me with the name of the movie I was talking about yesterday. It's called Hidden Figures.
