Txus me encantan tus historias.

Yesterday I received this message from Julia, an astrophysicist (take that) reader of this newseltter:
Txus I love your stories. I bought the microscope for the mobile and in the family we are delighted. 😃
I make a point to the issue of the number of ants, because it has not been clear to me. First is that "quadrillion" in English is translated by "cuatrillón" in Spanish (not cuadrillón that does not exist).and as the American billions (1,000 million) is different from the European (one million million million), with the quadrillion there is also confusion. So the clearest thing is to say that the estimate of ants is 20x10^15 which is the result of the study and so we all have it clear (anywhere in the world). It is that there are many mistranslations in the passage of billions, trillions and quadrillions from North America to Europe and vice versa and of course 3,6,12 zeros up-down 😫 as they have led to very fat cases of misunderstandings.
A thousand thanks for everything
Julia
And you are absolutely right. I'm a small number person, anything over a million I think tends to infinity and gives me tremendous vertigo.
But when your work is centered on the stars, you'll tell me if you have to take this into account!
So yes, better to avoid confusion to say it like this, i.e. 20 x 1015
20 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 ants.
Almost nothing.
And you don't know how excited I am that someone used to look through huge telescopes at the stars and the universe, likes my danioscope!
Which, by the way, is also good to see ants 🐜!
A hug
