English version below
Txus.
PD. Ya sabes, like si “vapalibro” ;)
Yesterday I was telling you how Katalin Karikó was determined to use RNA first as a therapy and then, when she got together with the immunologist she met in a photocopier (Drew Weissman), in vaccines.
RNA is one of those words that everyone said in the pandemic, precisely because of Katalin's vaccine. But most of the time without really knowing what it was.
Today I am going to tell you exactly what RNA is and you will see the genius and at the same time the difficulty of the approach of this incredible scientist.
Look, all your cells hide in their center, called nucleus, an instruction book. Well, more like an encyclopedia.
It describes step by step everything necessary to build you.
In each of your cells is the complete encyclopedia. But your cells are different, a neuron, the cells with which you think, has nothing to do with a lymphocyte, those smart soldiers we were talking about the other day.
The fact is that each cell "decides" what it reads and builds in itself from this instruction book. To do this, a scribe copies a small piece of the encyclopedia into the nucleus. And it takes it to the factory.
As if you took a sheet of paper and copied the recipe for rice and beans that your grandmother used to make and took it home.
The factory is outside the nucleus of the cell, in what is called the cytoplasm. In the factory, you read the instructions and build what it says on the instructions. They are shaped into proteins.
Okay, so RNA is that recipe that the scribe copies into the nucleus and takes it to the factory.
There are many diseases where some people are missing a chunk of instructions for a protein important for life or make a defective one, due to a mutation.
What Katalin was trying to do was to put the instructions for what was missing directly into the patient's cell.
Conceptually it is very clever.
The problem comes from the fact that those instructions lasted less and nothing outside the cytoplasm. They self-destructed right away.
Katalin's research came to protect that RNA so that it could get into the cells.
Tomorrow how that became a life-saving vaccine for humanity.
A hug
Txus.
Pd, you know, if you think this should go to the book please like it.
